eBay Shipping Label Printer: Dymo 4xl – 5 Reasons You Desperately Need One
We’ve been thinking a lot lately about how we can make our eBay business more efficient.
How can we get the same amount of work done (or more) but taking less time to do it.
We already told you about how we purchased eBay business cards so that we could stop printing packing slips. This was a huge time saver in the shipping department.
To help with our effort to save time, we purchased an eBay shipping label printer. More specifically, the DYMO Labelwriter 4XL Thermal Printer.
This is by far, one of the best investments we have made in our business!

Here’s why:
1. Huge Time Saver
Before we purchased the DYMO 4XL printer, like most people, we were using our standard inkjet printer to print shipping labels. While this is still way more efficient than standing in line at the post office, it was taking a lot of time to print.
First, you have to wait for it to print. Then cut the label out, and finally tape the label to the package.
Now, with our eBay shipping label printer, each label prints out super fast and we can quickly stick the label to the package.
Bam! Done!
2. No Ink to Buy… EVER!
We all know it, printer ink is expensive! When you’re buying ink every couple of weeks, the costs really add up.
Since the DYMO Labelwriter 4XL is a thermal printer, there is no ink. A thermal printer has “small heated pins which form characters on heat-sensitive paper”.
Now, we never have to worry about running out of ink!

3. Weatherproof
Another really nice thing about thermal labels is that they are weatherproof. Since they’re not printed with ink, there is no need to worry about the labels getting smudged or smeared if it gets wet.
Before, we were taping over each label to completely cover it (it took 3 pieces of tape) so that the paper wouldn’t get wet.
* Yes, we know you aren’t technically supposed to do that, but we never had any issues with the post office in the many years we were doing it.
So, not only do we not have to worry about the weather, but we are also saving a lot of tape!
We purchased the DYMO labels from Amazon, however, we are testing out a cheaper version that is compatible with the DYMO 4XL printer. This one is sold on eBay and we will let you know how it works out.
Update!
We love these cheaper labels from House Labels. We’ve been through many many rolls and have never had a problem.
There is one thing you need to watch out for when trying different labels. There is a little sticker that holds the roll together in the box. You’ll need to take this sticker off before loading the roll in your printer. However, some brands leave a sticky residue from on the first couple of labels. If yours does this, you’ll need to throw away those labels as the residue could jam up your machine.
We talk more about these labels in our YouTube video. You can watch it here!
4. Minimize The Risk of Mixing Up Shipping Labels on Multiple Items
With the old method, if we had multiple items to ship, we were printing out all our labels first and then taping them on afterward. However, there was one time when the labels got mixed up and we accidentally shipped the wrong items.
Imagine our customers surprise when they received a measuring cup instead of a power cord (and vice versa). Needless to say, we felt terrible about the whole mix up and vowed to never let that happen again.
With our DYMO Labelwriter 4XL thermal printer, we have been able to minimize that risk by sticking the label on the package as soon as it is printed.
5. It Looks More Professional
When our customers receive their item, it looks like anything else they might receive when purchasing online.
Gone are the days of trying to cut the label out in a straight line (that ends up usually still looking crooked).
Gone are the days of all the extra tape.
Now we have a simple, clean looking package that shows our customers that we care.
BONUS: Dymo 4XL FAQs
I don’t see the Dymo listed in the eBay settings. Which one do I select?
You’ll need to select “Zebra LP2844 4 x 6”. You can watch our step by step video to see how to set it up here.
Can you use this printer with the eBay app on your smartphone?
Unfortunately, this printer does not have wireless capabilities. Therefore, it is not compatible with mobile devices.
Will I need to purchase labels from DYMO to print or can I buy cheaper labels?
The labels need to have a small hole between each label for the printer to detect where the labels end. You can buy Dymo labels or Dymo compatible labels. But if you just buy any labels without that hole, then the labels will just keep feeding while the printer looks for the next hole.
Does it print in color?
No. It’s a thermal printer and uses heat sensitive paper on rolls and prints in black on white labels only.
Do this printer work with Etsy shipping?
This printer works brilliantly with Etsy. They have a radio button when you’re shipping your label that says “Print label with Dymo”.
Can this be used to print normal everyday address labels?
This printer is intended to print 4” x 6” shipping labels however, you can print smaller labels. If printing smaller labels I recommend you to be sure the labels stay loaded against the left wall to avoid printing problems.
Does this work with windows 10?
Yes, it works perfectly with Windows 10.
If you have a thermal printer for eBay shipping labels, we would love to hear what you think of it. Also, if you have any concerns or questions about using one of these printers, we’d be happy to help you. Leave a comment below.
